Front of House Hospitality Retail Concierge

Who we are:

Bernal Cutlery is a full-service cutlery shop, offering sharpening services, Japanese and Western-style culinary knives, vintage knives, outdoor, pocket, and craft knives. We also sell cooking tools and accessories along with offering knife skills and sharpening classes. We are proud to serve kitchen professionals, knife enthusiasts, and home cooks alike.

Our shop was established in 2005 by Josh Donald and Kelly Kozak in Bernal Heights, San Francisco in a slanting utility room hidden in the back of an apartment on Cortland Avenue. Using $40 to buy an extra stone and print some fliers, Bernal Cutlery was born. Sharpening services soon grew into selling vintage and antique culinary knives and after several years of working from various home workshops around Bernal Heights, we opened our first brick & mortar shop as a part of the 331 Cortland small business incubator collective in 2010.

We have since expanded twice and are now at home on Valencia Street in the dynamic Mission District. We take the role of small businesses in the community seriously, working hard to fundraise and support our local schools and develop rapport with organizations that resonate with our concept of food studies, approachability, and education.

We appreciate coming to work as whole people and value different work styles. We work hard as a mom and pop shop to foster a growth mindset and think it’s imperative to support a love of learning in our staff. We hope that you bring your perspective, enthusiasm, and interests to the table.

We are currently looking for front of house retail and hospitality to attend to our sometimes crowded shop by greeting folks at the door, giving direction when needed. This position is also a safety and security position and will demand a certain level of nuanced hospitality & safety shift leadership skills. As we’ve grown as a company we realize that the nature of a crowded and larger knife shop showroom has provided us with new challenges. So, although this job would ideally look like hospitality, sales support and chatting up customers, it will also be a vital role in ensuring that our operations run smoothly, safely and that our customers feel welcome and attended to. It’s a plus if you’ve worked in food service, crowd control or have background in security. This is a part-time job with a mandatory weekend shift rotation but for the right person could be a full-time job.

Some examples of responsibilities include:

  • Must be skilled at customer Service and homey hospitality
  • Comfortable being stationed on the retail floor and greeting customers
  • Effectively directing foot traffic
  • Overseeing knife purchases that need a fresh edge.
  • Assisting with merchandising on downtime
  • Gift wrapping when it’s busy
  • Must be able to talk to an occasional walk-in from a neighbor that might need directing out of the shop, and to treat said folks with dignity and respect.
