9cm Tonneau pattern knife from central France, made in Thiers France for Au Sabot with carbon steel blade double bolsters and olive handle scales.
The Tonneau knife pattern is a durable double bolstered sheepsfoot knife with early multiblade variations. According to Au Sabot Tonneau knives were given to farm workers at the time of hire by farmers at yearly agricultural fairs where livestock were sold. The knife represented a pledge towards a good working relationship.
Established in 1870, Au Sabot works with numerous independent workshops of the Durolle Valley around Thiers France, the capital of French knife making.
