Bernal Cutlery co-owner Kelly Kozak has been developing BC’s fist aid kit since 2014. Through many iterations and experimentations Kelly has settled on three core elements to the first aid kit (aside from the crucial bandaids and finger cots). For cuts Yunnan Baiyao, for moral support a chocolate square from The Maui Ku‘ia Estate Chocolate Factory and for burns ROMI Apothecary first aid salve.

Yunnan Baiyao; a hemostatic powdered medicine developed 1902 in China, its reputation is equal to that of penicillin in the U.S. and we have found that it speeds healing while slows down bleeding on cuts that almost need stitches.

The Maui Ku‘ia Estate Chocolate Factory is the largest chocolate factory in the state of Hawai‘i. The environmentally-friendly factory is 100% solar powered, making it the 2nd largest off-grid commercial facility in Maui. Their goal, between the chocolate factory and the farm, is to have a negative carbon footprint.

ROMI Apothecary founder, Romina Takimoto, formulated a specifically designed salve to assist with common first aid needs in the kitchen- burns, minor cuts, and scrapes. This rescue salve also helps with bug bites and rash. Plantain helps to decrease inflammation and repairs tissue, yarrow alleviates burns and bleeding, and chaparral is a potent antiseptic to prevent the growth of bacteria.
