Hand forged stainless clad Takefu Shiro 2 (different alloy than Hitachi shirogami) carbon steel with octagonal Ziricote handle. Hand hammered and water quenched with a clay slurry and kiln heat-treated. Bazes Blades knives are all hand sharpened with a hand finished kireba which prevents low spots and makes thinning them easy. This one has an asymmetric right biased grind.
Takefu Shiro2 has a similar carbon content to the more widely used Hitachi shirogami (.95-1.05%) but has a similar chromium content (.20-.50%) as aogami and has the addition of .7-1.3% nickel. Takefu Shiro2 has great toughness and longer edge life along with a tiny bit of added stain resistance. This is a steel that Alexander likes using and we are proud to offer it here.
Bazes Blades is a one-man workshop with each blade being carefully forged and ground by hand by Alexander Bazes in upstate New York. Bazes recently relocated back to the United States after a decade in Japan, training with numerous smiths and sharpeners and developing his craft on his own in his workshop in the hills over Kyoto.
We were delighted to meet him years ago, see his small forge and to see what he is doing now, his dedication shows!240mm cutting edge
