“Be Bop” Slaughter House by Sergio Lobato

Lobato brings the skills he has cultivated as an award winning digital illustrator to his work as a fine art painter. In his most recent body of work he takes raw flesh to the forefront. He describes the themes of his work as unconventional but with strong links to traditional still life. The paintings of raw meats with its fat, tendons, and slimy textured appearance elicit a strong response either of repulsion or of seduction. He aspires that after the initial shock the viewer will be drawn to the distinction between the objects in the painting and the subject matter of the painting.

Diego Velasquez and Francisco Goya are major influences that emerge in Lobato’s figurative work. Inspirations from works by Chaim Soutine, Francis Bacon, and contemporary painter Jenny Saville also pervade in his paintings.
