Knife dates from 1909 to 1950 Landers Frary & Clark made by the Landers Frary and Clark company in New Britain Ct. under their Universal brand.

This is a massive knife but is not too heavy, it still feels lively and manageble in hand. Blade and tang have a nice taper and the rosewood scales are nice and solid. Their square shaped tang and deep ground bolsters are very characteristic of LF&C and have a great feel when doing a pinch grip.

Blade is nice and straight without much loss in width to sharpening but it was poorly ground at one point leaving grinder marks on the faces.

At one point LF&C was one of the largest knife making outfits in the USA and was a huge kitchen equipment maker as well, their hand ground hand forged after drop forged kitchen knives were made for professional use and were of excellent quality.

Edge is a hair over 14.25” 3 1/8” wide at heel 18 1/4” overall length 15.3 oz

This is a carbon steel knife. Carbon steel is expected to develop a dark patina with use. It needs to be hand washed and towel dried soon after use. Do not air dry. Do not put it in the dishwasher. Long exposure to moisture and debris will result in rust. Any rust development should be removed with a light abrasive.

Use on a quality wooden cutting board will help the knife stay sharper for longer. Use on hard surfaces like plates and bamboo will reduce the edge life and can result in edge damage.

We recommend hand sharpening on whetstones. We have found that most western knives perform best with a medium finish starting around 1000 grit. Avoid pull through sharpeners and non-water cooled mechanized sharpening. Steel honing rods work well with this knife.
