After use, remove sap, pitch, and debris from the head and wipe it dry, especially after working in wet conditions or green wood. Because carbon steel can oxidize, apply a light coat of oil before storage to protect the surface; food-safe oils such as camellia or mineral oil are appropriate for carving and camp use. A darkened patina will naturally develop over time and is normal—it helps protect the steel and does not affect performance.
Maintain the edge with sharpening methods appropriate to the axe’s intended use, avoiding excessive grinding or overheating. Do not strike hardened steel, stone, or other tools, and avoid twisting the edge in the cut, as this can damage edge geometry. Store the axe in a dry environment with a sheath or edge guard, and avoid long-term storage in untreated leather, which can retain moisture.

Fine Finish Axe
A fine finishing range of approximately 2000–6000 grit, producing a highly keen, low-roughness edge. The refined surface reduces friction at the wood–steel interface while allowing the edge to cleanly sever fibers rather than crush or tear them. This combination of reduced resistance and controlled fiber fracture enables the edge and axe head to pass more efficiently into the cut, improving penetration, control, and edge stability. Best suited for axes that cut across the grain rather than split along it, including felling, brush clearing, and especially carving.

About Gränsfors Bruk
Hälsingland, Sweden
For more than 100 years, Gränsfors Bruk has produced handcrafted axes in northern Sweden with a deep commitment to quality, traditional craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility. Each axe is forged by hand from steel made entirely from recycled scrap, sourced from Ovako, a European steelmaker recognized for strong environmental standards and ongoing emissions reduction.
Handles are made from durable American hickory, chosen for its strength and flexibility to extend handle life and reduce waste, and are finished with linseed oil and beeswax. The axe heads are fitted using traditional wooden wedges rather than epoxy, and each axe is paired with a vegetable-tanned, biodegradable leather sheath from a Swedish tannery, free from heavy metals. Every axe is stamped with the initials of the blacksmith who forged it, reflecting Gränsfors Bruk’s philosophy of accountability, longevity, and responsible production—values that continue to guide the company as it supplies axes to customers in more than 28 countries worldwide.
