Thomas Ellin & Co Vulcan 8" slicer with hand forged and hand ground after drop forged carbon steel blade with 4 pinned ebony handle in excellent barely used condition.

Thomas Ellin & Co was active from 1821 to 1980 and this knife offers little clues as to it's age in it's marks. The lack of 'England' after Sheffield suggests pre 1891 manufacture as many Sheffield makers were looking to export to the USA which required a country of origin mark but the sans serif font used suggests later 20th century manufacture, it could very well be they didn't trade with the USA. The pinned handle is certainly old style but this was used well into the mid to late even 20th century. The hand forged after drop forged construction is likely our best bet to get an age, it also has been ground on old stone grinder.

In any case its a great example of old Sheffield knife design and craft and offers a window into old Sheffield knifemaking.

There is a small crack 1/4" from the beginning of edge in heel. Don't try to flex it like a fillet knife and it's fine.
