Morihei Hishiboshi 4000-grit stone is a hazy, fine finisher made with natural and man-made abrasives, formulated to Morihei's specifications to cut like a natural stone with the consistency of a synthetic. This semi-soft stone has an easygoing feel, great for wide-bevel polishing or narrow double-bevel work; it works well in a progression with other Morihei stones. Aside from creating a nice edge, these create a beautiful contrast between the hard-edge-forming hagane-layer steel and the softer jigane cladding. Like a natural stone, these are best not soaked, although they will not suffer as quickly as a natural stone from soaking. Just soft enough to generate its own mud with sharpening, this stone does not typically require a nagura.
This stone is a good choice for a variety of stainless steels or high-alloy steels that develop a washed-out appearance after a few hours of cutting with a finer finish, or as a pre-polish for finer synthetic or natural stones.
This stone has a toothy yet still refined cutting feel and will work reliably as a finisher across many steels or as a pre-polish for finer synthetic or natural stones. Even when it is not the perfect finish, it will always be good, never over-polished.
