Hand forged A Nittinger hog splitter made in the mid to late 19th century. Blade has seen some rust and has some pits however the blade is still very full and has a fresh edge. Turned hardwood handle with iron ferrule and bolted end cap is free from cracks and nice and solid. 

Established in 1852 August Nittinger Company is one of the oldest manufacturers of butchery supplies. Located at nos. 826, 828, & 830 North Fourth Street in Philadelphia Pa. and was one of the largest such suppliers in their day. As well as manufacturing the were a large importer of John Wilson's butcher knives and steels from Sheffield England, often called I Wilson for the way the J looks on their stamp.
