Faint Henry Sears marking still intact but made on contract for Sears by one of the great New England makers likely in the 1920s. This knife was hand forged after drop forged and hand ground with an itegral oval bolster (after the Ideal pattern in France was developed in 1920s?), with a thin semi flexible blade. It had been sharpened in a bit and became thick behind the edge, it has now been partially thinned and re-surfaced here at Bernal Cutlery. This is a great knife for carving roasts, integrating an old English style of knife designed to slice large roast beefs including the quintessentially English small birds head pommel design on handle.
This knife is a great example of the cutlery made in the North East in Massachusetts and Connecticut in the 19th and early 20th century rivaling in quality the best European made knives of the day and representing the high water mark of American knife-making.
12" blade just under 1 1/2" wide and 17.5" overall
