The Sarek Splitting Axe is named after the Sarek National Park which is located in Jokkmokk Municipality, Lapland in northern Sweden. Established in 1909, the park is one of the oldest national parks in Europe.

The design’s secret is a hundred-year-old Swedish splitting pattern with small cheeks and a straight blade that cuts deeply into the wood. A metal spine runs along the cheeks of the axe that reduces friction while providing wedging action to break wood open. The 3.5-lb. axe head is meticulously finished and expertly balanced with a straight 30-inch American hickory handle. The cutting edge is approximately 2.75-inches in length. Note: all Hults Bruk axes are hand forged, so there may be slight variations from axe to axe.

  • The axe head is hand forged at the historic Hults Bruk, a forge that has been in operation since 1697.
  • Each axe is made from high-quality Swedish axe steel, expertly tempered to hold a very sharp edge even after repeated sharpening.
  • Blackened, hand-finished, razor-sharp with a polished edge.
  • Straight American hickory handle, sanded, protected with linseed oil and engraved with the HB logo.
  • Each axe comes with a premium leather sheath, shipped with a storage box and detailed user’s manual.

After use, remove sap, pitch, and debris from the head and wipe it dry, especially after working in wet conditions or green wood. Because carbon steel can oxidize, apply a light coat of oil before storage to protect the surface; food-safe oils such as camellia or mineral oil are appropriate for carving and camp use. A darkened patina will naturally develop over time and is normal—it helps protect the steel and does not affect performance.

Maintain the edge with sharpening methods appropriate to the axe’s intended use, avoiding excessive grinding or overheating. Do not strike hardened steel, stone, or other tools, and avoid twisting the edge in the cut, as this can damage edge geometry. Store the axe in a dry environment with a sheath or edge guard, and avoid long-term storage in untreated leather, which can retain moisture.

Medium Finish Axe

A medium finishing range of approximately 800–1000 grit, producing a tough, durable edge with controlled surface roughness. This finish favors edge stability and impact resistance while maintaining sufficient bite at contact. Rather than cleanly severing fibers, the edge initiates a controlled fracture that allows the wedge of the axe head to efficiently drive along the grain, forcing the wood apart. Well suited for splitting axes, where effective energy transfer, grain separation, and long-term edge resilience matter more than fine cutting keenness.
