The Mizuno Satsuma axe has an all steel head and Kanto oak handle, lightweight and great for smaller jobs, clearing brush, splitting kindling etc.

It is important to note these are not meant to be used against stones or with excessive force, while not excessively hardened their edges are harder than many western axes and will not tolerate misuse.

After use, remove sap, pitch, and debris from the head and wipe it dry, especially after working in wet conditions or green wood. Because carbon steel can oxidize, apply a light coat of oil before storage to protect the surface; food-safe oils such as camellia or mineral oil are appropriate for carving and camp use. A darkened patina will naturally develop over time and is normal—it helps protect the steel and does not affect performance.

Maintain the edge with sharpening methods appropriate to the axe’s intended use, avoiding excessive grinding or overheating. Do not strike hardened steel, stone, or other tools, and avoid twisting the edge in the cut, as this can damage edge geometry. Store the axe in a dry environment with a sheath or edge guard, and avoid long-term storage in untreated leather, which can retain moisture.

Fine Finish Axe

A fine finishing range of approximately 2000–6000 grit, producing a highly keen, low-roughness edge. The refined surface reduces friction at the wood–steel interface while allowing the edge to cleanly sever fibers rather than crush or tear them. This combination of reduced resistance and controlled fiber fracture enables the edge and axe head to pass more efficiently into the cut, improving penetration, control, and edge stability. Best suited for axes that cut across the grain rather than split along it, including felling, brush clearing, and especially carving.

About Mizuno Seisakujo

Sanjo, Niigata, Japan

Mizuno Seisakujo Axes are rooted in the deep toolmaking traditions of Niigata Prefecture, a region historically shaped by heavy snowfall, dense forests, and a long reliance on finely made edge tools. They are hand forged in Sanjo, Niigata, at Mizuno Seisakujo, a small workshop known for preserving traditional blacksmithing techniques while producing serious working tools.

Under the supervision of dentō kōgeishi (Traditional Master Craftsman) Isao Mizuno, each axe is made with a clear focus on performance, balance, and longevity. Drawing from generations of Japanese forestry and carpentry tools, Mizuno axes emphasize tough steel, controlled heat treatment, and geometry suited for real outdoor and woodworking use rather than display.

The result is an axe that feels purposeful and refined; traditional in method, yet practical for modern users. Mizuno Axes represent the quiet excellence of Sanjo craftsmanship: honest tools made by skilled hands, intended to be trusted for decades.
