Honyama (Japan)

Honyama stones are the original Japanese fine whetstones from mines in the mountains above Kyoto. For over 800 years they have been used to create fine finished edges especially on swords and woodworking tools used in temple architecture. Their key importance in these fields led to strict controls on their distribution for hundreds of years. The evolution of Japanese cutting tools was formed directly through the use of these stones and they still provide excellent cutting edges on hard high carbon steels.
