Four-piece rice cooking donabe includes inner lid, outer lid, steamer insert and pot.

These rice cooking donabe are the most versatile donabe styles. Aside from cooking rice, they can be used to cook porridge, stews, soups, and other gohanmono (seasoned rice dishes). Unlike other donabe, which need to gradually introduce even heat as to not break, Daikoku donabe can be transfered directly from the refrigerator to the stovetop.

This donabe has the ability to distribute condensation and hold heat in the microwave due to the special glaze on the interior of the pot. This makes it ideal for cooking rice in the microwave. You can also use this as an ohitsu, or warming vessel, using the outer lid and pot to reheat already cooked rice.

There is no need to pre-soak the rice before cooking in this donabe. Cook for 15min (based on a 500 watt microwave) and then let rice rest for 5- 15 minutes. Ideally, the more rice you cook, the longer it should rest. We recommend experimenting with your cooking time to achieve your desired rice firmness and texture.

Banko ware rice donabe are measured in Japanese gou. We offer a 1-gou rice measuring cup .

1 gou = 180ml or ¾ of a US Cup

For sizing, specs, and measurements of white vs. brown rice, or if you are unfamiliar with using donabe, please reference our Donabe: Use and Care page.

When cooking in Banko ware pots, a far infrared wavelength is created which makes for more efficient cooking than direct surface conducted heating. Banko ware can be used on gas range tops, inside an oven and for brief re-heatings microwave ovens. Banko ware is not suitable for electric range tops (electric oven is ok), no deep frying or use on induction burners.

Banko ware aka Banko Yaki (萬古焼)or Yokkaichi Banko Yaki is a heat resistant earthenware that has been made in Mie prefecture since the 18th century. It represents the majority of stoneware for cooking produced in Japan, and is officially recognized as a traditional Japanese craft. The addition of petalite added to the clay gives Banko ware an excellent heat resistance and allows it to be exposed to direct flame.
