A masu is a traditional Japanese wooden box made from hinoki, used primarily for drinking sake or for the Japanese measurement of rice (gou).

Masus have been used in Japan for over 1300 years, with the volume being regulated at 180ml around 500 years ago and remaining unchanged since. They were originally used to measure out rice when it was still being used as a form of currency.

We are honored to be working with a company that has specialized in this traditional craft for over 75 years. Each one is handmade by a craftsperson with expertise in Japanese joinery.

Although in modern times masus have been used commonly to drink sake, they should not have liquid in them for prolonged periods of time. If used for beverages, hand-wash with water and dry immediately after used. Repeatedly using for liquids especially for long periods of time may result in leaks and stains.

Not suitable for dishwasher; hand wash and store dry after use.
