Osaka Prefecture

For over 600 years, Osaka Prefecture—and especially Sakai City—has been a central force in Japanese knife-making. Once renowned for crafting swords for samurai, Sakai transitioned during the Edo period into producing kitchen knives, quickly earning a reputation for some of the finest blades in Japan. Today, that tradition continues through the hands of highly skilled blacksmiths and sharpeners who collaborate closely to create tools of lasting performance and beauty. Makers like Togashi, Tanaka, and Nakagawa uphold this legacy, producing knives celebrated for their exceptional balance, refined edge profiles, and thin, powerful cuts. The name “Sakai” remains synonymous with the highest standard in Japanese cutlery.

But Osaka’s craftsmanship isn’t limited to blades. The region is also home to the Chusen dyeing technique, used to create traditional tenugui (Japanese hand towels). These textiles are not only functional but expressive, dyed by hand with layered color and pattern using a process that allows both sides of the cloth to retain the design. Our collection includes tenugui made using this centuries-old method—an art form that reflects the same values of precision, heritage, and attention to detail that define Sakai’s blades.

This collection brings together the best of Osaka’s enduring craft culture. Whether you’re seeking a hand-forged knife for the kitchen or a beautifully dyed textile for daily use, each piece speaks to a tradition shaped by integrity, artistry, and purpose.
