Antique Russell Green River Works 7" butchers cleaver, hand forged in the old style but with the arrow R mark started in the 1920s.

Blade is laminated hard steel with softer mild steel backing, it has seen some hammering to the spine which has been mostly ground away, the ferrule is nice and secure with no wiggles and the handle scales are nice and secure with no cracks, big gaps or looseness.

J Russell was one of the very first American cutlery makers and was located in Greenfield Massachusetts the epicenter of American knifemaking and the American industrial revolution. in 1874 they moved to nearby Turner's Falls. In the 1930s they merged with old rival Harrington cutlery and formed the Dexter Russell brand. The Russell trademarks have been used independently up until today on old patterns but this construction is definitely old.

6.75" cutting edge, 12.75" overall length 25 oz

This is a carbon steel knife. Carbon steel is expected to develop a dark patina with use. It needs to be hand washed and towel dried soon after use. Do not air dry. Do not put it in the dishwasher. Long exposure to moisture and debris will result in rust. Any rust development should be removed with a light abrasive.

Use on a quality wooden cutting board will help the knife stay sharper for longer. Use on hard surfaces like plates and bamboo will reduce the edge life and can result in edge damage.

We recommend hand sharpening on whetstones. We have found that most western knives perform best with a medium finish starting around 1000 grit. Avoid pull through sharpeners and non-water cooled mechanized sharpening. Steel honing rods work well with this knife.
