These synthetic nagura help raise a slurry on stones from approximately 1000 grit on up and smooth the surface of fine stones after flattening. Not recommended for natural stones or stones over 8000 grit.
The slurry raised from a synthetic nagura both keeps spent metal from getting stuck in the surface of a stone and helps to encourage the exposure of fresh new abrasive from the host stone at the beginning of sharpening. Many medium grit stones will cut faster with the use of a nagura and fine stones also cut faster with a smoother surface rather than a grooved surface from a stone flattener.
