New unused vintage Village Blacksmith (Washington Cutlery Co.1898-1940) 12" chef knife with original box and packaging. So unusual to find the original packaging like this, the best part is the sleeve which reads "Village Blacksmith Hand Made Tools these tools are made of the best material obtainable by a process and with a care that insures satisfactory service in the hands of intelligent users"

Its hard to say with 100% certainty but I can say with 92% certainty that this was made for Village Blacksmith (who did lots of manufacturing themselves) that this was likely made by Dexter as the knife pattern is very unique to them. Maybe an 8% chance this was made just like the Dexter.

Wide but thin and light, this knife was hand forged after drop forged and hand ground to finish, the handle is a pakka or composite hardwood (which I have not seen on this era of Dexter) with nickel rivets.

This was found with some very light surface rust forming which we cleaned as gently as possible and still retain the light marking on blade, the box shows wear but otherwise is a true time capsule.

12" Blade, 17.25" overall 12oz

This is a carbon steel knife. Carbon steel is expected to develop a dark patina with use. It needs to be hand washed and towel dried soon after use. Do not air dry. Do not put it in the dishwasher. Long exposure to moisture and debris will result in rust. Any rust development should be removed with a light abrasive.

Use on a quality wooden cutting board will help the knife stay sharper for longer. Use on hard surfaces like plates and bamboo will reduce the edge life and can result in edge damage.

We recommend hand sharpening on whetstones. We have found that most western knives perform best with a medium finish starting around 1000 grit. Avoid pull through sharpeners and non-water cooled mechanized sharpening. Steel honing rods work well with this knife.
